Hidden Allergens on Labels

If you are a caretaker of a child with food allergies, or have dietary restrictions in your family, you have heard the question “Is this safe for me?” Grocery store or online food shopping can be an arduous process at best. Since the Food Allergy Labeling and Consumer Protection Act went into effect, manufacturers must list the top eight allergens (Wheat, Eggs, Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Dairy, Fish, Shellfish and Soy) whose presence in a food product mandates clear labeling. That is great, except some ingredients may have unfamiliar names and unless you are alert, you could miss them, with potentially life-threatening results. For example, did you know to search for “Lysozyme” in labels if there is an allergy to eggs? Or how about, “Arachis” if you have a child allergic to peanuts?
